[edit] Yano's

Opened in January of 1985 on Milwaukee Street downtown, the "all ages" venue Yano's was a response to the raising of the then drinking age in Wisconsin from 18 to 19. The very first band to headline at Yano's was Disdain with NRK opening. For several months thereafter Yano's was the center of the hardcore punk scene in Milwaukee. National acts such as Dr. Know, The Dead Milk Men and Chicago's Out of Order headlined with local groups opening. Admission was only $3. Unfortunately, the popularity of the venue had attracted the attention of the local police (whose union was located directly across the street). Apparently, they did not take a liking to all of the punk kids hanging out on the sidewalk. On April 20, 1985, during a performance by Chicago's Out of Order, the police ordered the venue to be closed claiming that it was overcrowded. Some of the kids in the audience ended up scuffling with police. This episode made the local headlines for a few days afterward. Unfortunately, due to threats from the city, the owners decided not to reopen, and Yano's closed its doors forever.

[edit] Comments

  • I remember when I was in high school around 1985 or so that Drastic Measures used to play there. Drastic Measures consisted of guys I knew since grade school include Paul Ryan, Dean Nelson, Jim Kaminski, and I think somebody else. This is a vague memory, so if it's totally wrong correct it. --Pete Prodoehl 06:51, 9 Sep 2005 (PDT)
  • Also, there was the famous "Yano's Riot" where the police came in and forced everyone out and beat a few kids, supposedly because of going over the legal capacity for people in the club. --Pete Prodoehl 06:51, 9 Sep 2005 (PDT)
  • I think that the fourth member of Drastic Measures was Al Sanders (John K is here and concurs with this opinion). --Scott Smith 21:38, 28 Oct 2005 (PDT)
  • Yes! I believe Al Sanders was also in Drastic Measures... --Pete Prodoehl 06:29, 4 Nov 2005 (PST)
  • Tim Kaye was the original lead guitarist for Drastic Measures. This guy could beat that axe. He played with them for a few years but left to play with Citizen X. Dean Nelson took Tim's place and did a fairly good job.
  • My most vivid memory from Yano's has to be when my car was stolen right in front of me! I was unloading band equipment from the trunk of my car when two guys out of nowhere jumped into the front seat and sped off. (It was the middle of January and I had left my car running out front to keep it warm) I remember chasing my car down the street shouting at them to stop. Needless to say, my car was recovered two weeks later, completely totaled! --Peter Flessas
  • Yano's was a great place to play –– Great People, Great Stage. every time Out of Order played Milwaukee, it was a great time: pigeon club, apartment, yano's, the pavilion. Even the cops at that last show at Yano's couldn't kill the fact that Milwaukee treated bands well. –– Devon, Out of Order.
  • I seem to remember this place was started/owned by the parent's of someone's band??? And the night of the riot the cops beat up some one they shouldn't have (ie. the kid of someone with money/lawyers).
  • Yanos was leased space by a Milwaukee lawyer Peter Flessas. His son's band was NRK from Brookfield.
