Keyboarding this old copy from back in the day is as painful as when you hear your voice on an answering machine. I could never do v/o. I have to tell you, as I do this, the will-to-edit just screams at me. I want to change this. I want to change that. Yet, I have left in all fragments, misspellings, and whatever else Microsoft Word dislikes to be faithful to the originals – except for address and phone numbers. So you better appreciate it. ;) What I find funny, or acutely painful, is the attitude I tried to portray. In some cases, I used these reports for my own agenda and my own bitterness at the time. Was I really this much of an idiot? Jesus… I’d smack a kid like that if I met him today. But at the time, whatever issues I was harping on seemed so big and important – and they were I suppose. However, I find little commonality or urgency in them today. Yes, I know, all I am doing is apologizing for either real or self-perceived faults with these reports – which just means that I will regret this introduction in a few years from now.
This is, by no means, a complete archive, and it is not meant to be. I have found one scene report, not by me, and have attributed that as well. If you’ve done a scene report back-in-the-day, I encourage you to publish it here. (I think Eric Optophobia has at least one that I can recall.)
Anyway, I thought would put these up on the Milw HC Wiki as they encapsulate and document a good chunk of scene history. Look at that, all of suddenly, I am a historian. Perhaps, my writings will find their way next to Herodotus on the mantle of antiquity?
Thanks for reading. And if you read them the first time, double thanks.
And as always, no racist, sexist or fascist material here. (Sarcasm)

MRR NO 91, December 1990
Like a dog in a roadside ditch that’s just regaining consciousness, the Madison area music scene is beginning to twitch with signs of life. Thanks to some overly hyperactive and somewhat immature show go-ers that thought that being punk meant getting drunk and trashing everything in sight (?), Turner Hall, Forester Hall, The Wil-Mar and many other venues well known to touring acts have banned bands for life, and it is only just now – three years later º that we’ve been able to find places big enough for large touring acts to play at. Speaking which, I’d like to thank all of the great touring bands that decided not to take a detour around Madison this summer for helping breathe life into or dying local scene.
Musicale Productions has been recording many of these shows as of late for the Static Attack Live Compilation. The main purpose of this compilation is to stitch the largely amputated Madison scene in with the world outside of Wisconsin, as we have been largely ignored by touring bands the past couple of years. The first compilation, titled Madison’s Underground, includes two song by each of the following bands: GOTHIC BONE, ISLE OF DOGS, RAWHEAD (formerly Rusty Crayfish), INSPECTOR 12, TWO MINUTES HATE (formerly Social Interrogation/Parasite) and NATURAL CAUSE. The compilation is professionally dubbed and packaged, the quality excellent. At this point the compilation is available by mail order only for $7 post paid.
One of the bands on the compilation, NATURAL CAUSE, has been releasing a limited number of copies of each show that they play, which are professionally mixed live and sold the same night. The only cassette still available by mail order is their July 15th show with ALL and INSPECTOR 12. This show was unique in that an ex-vocalist guest sang one of their old song the band had just written. They have had bed better shows since this one, but all of their other cassettes have already sold out. This cassette is available for $4 post paid. Future plan are to release a 7” EP in December.
Madison INSPECTOR 12 recently returned from their summer tour promoting their latest release, a professionally packaged cassette on the Bovine Records label which is titled Still on You. It will please mot of you who purchased their Look Inside 7”. I-12 also released a split 7” ($3.50 ppd.) on Family Fest Records with the Libido Boyz of Manakato, Minnesota just a couple of months ago, now available limited edition “beer-colored” vinyl. I hope most of you had a chance to see these guys, they’re great live, when they passed through your area, as rumors are running around town that they may be breaking up now that one of them has tasted their own wedding cake, and a second member is about to follow suit. Then again,, I’ve been hearing similar rumors about this band breaking up for a long as I’ve been one of their fans, RUSTY CRAYFISH recently changed their name to RAWHEAD when they replaced their bass player. They’ve been doing well in the bar scene lately, but the underage underground scene doesn’t seem to be paying as much attention to them as they deserve. The independent record companies have been, however. Tentative plans are to release a 7” on either Bovine or Static Attack Records.
If musical trends repeat themselves every 20 years at the “experts” claim they do, then I know of a classic-style punk band that’s going to do well. PARASITE (formerly Social Interrogation) has changed their name again to TWO MINUTES HATE now that they’ve got Pat Hotlen of NATURAL CAUSE filling in on drums. Besides having hours and hours of unused studio time with (and donated by ) celebrity producer Butch Vig of Smart Studios, they’ve had some interest from a label upstate. As of yet, however, they don’t seem to be interested in rushing things. Their only release other than their two songs on the Static Attack Live! Compilation is a live cassette of their August 18th show out on Static Attack ($5, ppd). TWO MINUTES HAE plans on touring down to Texas and back up the mid-eastern states this December, so be watching for them.
I’m going to cut myself off now before I start to get long-winded. All of the cassette releases mentioned above are available through: Musicale Productions, Madison, WI. This is a collective address used by some local show promoters (booking shows at the State Street Center, The Loft, The Atwood, etc), Static Attack Records, MOR Magazine ($2 ppd with the music inside), and most of bands listed above. In any case, we will forward your letters to correct person(s).
I hope this scene report hasn’t sounded like one big ad – my purpose in writing this had been to introduce you to some of the bands in our area. We’ve got a lot of good local talent here that has been going unnoticed because we haven’t been having many big touring acts. The ol dog ain’t quite o lame these days, the Madison scene is alive and kicking!
Take Care,
Ken U.

MRR Number 97, June 1991 Howdy, this is Mahtt of Tiny Fanzine here to give you the dope on your favorite state and mine, Wisconsin. By the way I’m writing this little report on March 7th while suffering from the flu in the big way. But forget that, here’s the juicy bits.
Seeing as I live closer to Milwaukee, I’ll tell you what’s going on there first. TRADEMARK, the little darlings, have gone three piece by kicking out their old drummers and bassist and adding a a new drummer with the signer taking up bass geetar. Their sound is kinda funky but mostly grungy punk. They just put out a new tape entitled Woking the Dogman. And you can get it by sending $3 to: Greenfield, WI. DEMISE has gotten their shit back together. After the tour this summer the bassist and drummer left the band to concentrate on their other band called RHINELANDER, more on them later. DEMISE picked up ex-NO JOKE drummer Jeff and ex-NATURAL CAUSE bassist Tim. They just played a show last Sunday and kicked ass. They still have their old tapes for $2 and you can get it at” c/o Duwanye /Milwaukee. As mention above, RHINELANDER, are a new band (well not really) with a poppy punk kinda sound and they plan on releasing a split 7” with Lack of Social Decent (or simply LSD) in the next few months. Contact RHINELANDER Germantown, WI. LSD, who are no longer sexist or immature, have developed into one hell of a great band to watch. Interview these guys or just bother them at: Hubertus, WI. TURBINE which has a pretty unusual sound here in Wis have been playing around and about. Write to them at: Madison, WI. MIND THELFT, yes theflt, have gone threw the customary member changes and have developed a real intense sound. Write to Bradly for sticker of for a picture of his tat at: Brookfield, WI. FINAL MOTION, who are a new band, played a show a while back and did mostly covers and I don’t have a address. That’s it for bands, now on to the zines.
XY ZIne is history but upfrom the aches comes Stark Reality. It is punk and has a number of interviews. Send $1 to Terd, Milwaukee. 50/50 Zine, in its first issue, is an interesting little trip in the minds of three individuals. Lotsa stuff to read and you get it at the same address as RHINELANDER. Optophobia has change its headquarters up in Madison. I guess he’s got some copies left so send $1 to the same address as TURBINE’S, thanx. Alien Relay, just completed ish #2 can be reached at Oconomowoc, WI. Ar is mostly morbidness and philosophy and punk rock, it’s cool get it. Tiny Fanzine #4 is in the works and should come out in a month or tow. You can reach me at the same address as Alien Relay but make sure you distinguish between the two. Rattlesnake Press is still going strongly and you can reach the two page marvel at Greenfield, WI. That’s it for Milwaukee, now to Maddyson.
INSPECTOR 12 released a new tape awhile back and have been a slew of compliations. You can get the new tape at: Madison, WI and send $6.00. The following two bands can be reached at the same address. NAKED FACE, formerly Oxymorons, have been playing heare and there with a hard core/thrash sound. They really have improved quite a bit and are fun band to watch. Write ‘em. Oh and they have just put out a live tape for a $1.50. TWO MINUTES HATE, still kicking budda, somewhat recently pout out a live tape and one must check it out by sending $3.00 to Madison, WI. Please be sure to distinguish between the two. NATURAL CAUSE whose sound comes close to VoiVod but are much more brutal with a heavy intricacy, have released an awe inspiring live three song demo. You can get the demo for $2 at Madison, WI. That’s it for bands that I can remember, now onto the zines.
Distress its on its way with a pretty good start and they are always looking for contributors so write to the folks at Madison, WI. Crusty is a small but comfortable zine done by the editor of Intense Expression which has gone to dust. Ish number uno has interview with Natural Cause, and Steve Mar the Sacto punk scenester. Send 29 cents to Madison, WI. Last but least, No External Compulsion #4 is out. This time around Crito’s dabbled in graphics bit and has interviews, reviews, and opinions-n-such. I think its 50 cents so write to the poor guy at Madison, WI. Enough of Matty’s son let’s go to to Medford with information being supplied by Weasle of VEGATABLE SPIT. This info is a little dated but good enough for our purposes and thanx Weasle.
Ahh! SHIVERY (members of MCT and PNEMONIA 5) and VEGATABLE SPIT played October 20th at the “Shack” to a packed house. I mean face to face with the band. Free beer, cake, and more people you can shake a stick at. All bands kicked and all had a great time. DISH PAN HANDS and RHINELANDER (Milwaukee) played at the shcak I missed it but everyone said it was great. MINK CAPITOL TERROR (MCT) are questionable right now, no one knows. Rumor has it CONTENTS UNDER PRESSURE are dead but not for sure. You can contact SHIVERY for shows at: c/o Tom Fronk (715). VEGETABLE SPIT can be contacted at Brian (Weasle) Metz, Medford, WI. We have two tapes out, first one We’re not for you is $4 and Let Me Think About It is $5.00. VEGETABLE SPIT will be recording in Dec 1990 which will be released in spring of 1990, and companies give me a call.
It’s me again, Mahtt. Well that’s it or this scene report, see ya next time if I ever do one. Oh and you other WI scenesters if you’d like info on shows in Milwaukee or Madison or you wann give info on somewhere’s in the state you can either write me or call me at (414) and tell me what’s up. Thanz for your time. Later dood.

MRR NO. 111. August 1992 What the fuck, here’s another scene report that none of you will read and that will leave me with a big headache as usual, so here goes my filth. I’ve been moving all around the place, so all those who want to reach me can do at: Madison, WI. If you wish to call, (608), and talk to me, fine, but don’t wake me up. I might print all the addresses afterwards, it all depends on how I feel.
And now the news in brief. Bands with new drummers: DEMISE, new bassists and new drummer. NAKED AGGRESSION the same. Both bands have new vinyl. NATURAL CAUSE, new singer and new bassist, look for the new seven inch out on Profane Records. Bands that are no more, kaput, dead: MIND THEFT, NAKED FACE, TWOMINUTESHATE (they don’t deserve this blurb), TOTEN ORGASMUS. Other band news: INSPECTOR 12 is still around. TURBINE is still around. SOULSTORM is still around. DRAWBACK still sucks. New bands. BUSINESS AS USUAL, very political, very bald. RAID, mix The Exploited and Straight Edge stuff and that’s what you got. LSD still plays out. KADAK = East Bay pop or Green Day. WITHSTAND reported to be Christian SE stuff. Zak from Stark Reality fame is in a band. That’s it for bands. If I forgot your band, too bad.
Zines. Too many, fuk them. Or just look in the reviews section of this here rag for that info. I’d rather write about something else, so here goes.
Well, I’d rather focus my attention on what’s it like living out here and maybe Milwaukee too. I’ll also throw in some gossip and shit like that to keep your attention.
I live in Madison, a college town, a safe town, but culturally boring one. I live in a a four bedroom house with three other guys that has a basement and an attic for $600 a month, though this excludes heat and light. We’ve got a pretty cheap deal, though the closer you get to campus, the more yer gonna pay. If the apartment/flat idea doesn’t sound like your cup of coffee, you can always check out the housing co-ops we have here. There’s about fifteen and all need members, so if you wanna head for the Midwest here’s a good chance of finding housing. There relatively cheap and close to the downtown (or uptown as us locals call it) area.
We’ve got food co-ops here, too. The Mifflin Street Co-op, which is off Mifflin Street, and the Williamson (or simply Willy) Stret Co-op off of Williamson Street. There’s also Whole Earth (a workers collective) of of Johnson Street and a few other uppity yuppy health food stores where you can buy vegan grub and soy milk. Another place to check out, even though it’s not a co-op, is a place called Aldi. Cheap food heaven. It’s the place to shop in bulk and its located off East Washington Avenue by Walgreens and Bader Bowl.
Neato places to hang out. Ellis Deli, off of State St. Here you can get kinda cheap food in an appealing punk atmosphere. I usually get a large plate of fries, big enough for tow or three people, and a vanilla Coke for about three smackers. Willibee’s face off of WIllliamson St. It’s a vegan/vegie café. Never ate there, but reported to be cool. Other place to hang out would be State Street with all its easy shoplifting stores, people, parks, and buses. If you need to do some panhandling, I would suggest doing it there as it seems to be the best place. Oooh, one last hint about Sate St is to buy your records from Karoline at Kat’s Meow (an alternative clothing store). She sells them cheap and doesn’t rip you off. Stay away from all other record stores off of State, with the exception being Penny Lane, Wazzo, and maybe even the Sugar Shack. The carry used records and sometime you can get a bargain.
To keep ourselves busy when we there aren’t shows-n-such is our weekly Wednesday night dinners that witch between three punk houses. The Toilet House (home of Naked Aggression), The Fang Gang house, and the place I live in, the Posi Palace or the Smack Shack. Basically what happens is the house that’s lucky enough to host the event makes food for all that comes. It’s a great way to get together with and hang out with your fellow scene mates. I have the duty of hosting this Wednesday’s feast. I’m gonna make Hash Browns, fucking the most delicious thing ever, at least the way I make it. All is invited, so if you’re passing through the state, get in touch. Also bands and crashers that need a place to stay, can say with us as we’ve got a lot of space to share. All we ask is that you clean your dishes and buy your own food. (My coffee tastes like shit.)
Anything else? Probably, but I am too damn lazy or forgetful at this present time. Do I feel like talking about Milwaukee. No fuk it, maybe next time as it’s easier for me to yap about Madison.
Getting and going out for coffee seems to be a big punk past time so I’ll tell you more about places to get coffee. Let’s see here. Radical Rye, though not cheap, has great fucking sandwiches and Eight O’Clock coffee. Next we got Amy’s Café, never been there. La Bamba with Burritos as big as your head, coffee not sure. Hmmm… Canterbury’s Book seller and coffee house. Steep-n-Brew. Fashionable college yuppie hang out, good swill thought. And one place which I forgot.
Bookstores. People’s Books, tons of different “progressive” and anarachist shit. Up the street is Rainbow, basically the same. Pick a Book, new books. Used bookstores. We’ve got Avol’s Paul’s and Meddlers. Check ‘em out.
One little tidbit about Milwaukee that’s kind of interesting. On the corner of Marshall and Brady Streets we used to have a punk house called the Marshall Brady house. A bunch of punx had this neat place that was cool to hang out with the Milwaukee locals. At this place we had the Band DEMISE, Kerri Pries, Scrods, ‘little” Duwanye, Reek-o, John and Rob, and others, with my hazy brain its hard to recall who else lived there. But some people lost everything they owned and it was pretty much of an inner scene tragedy. The funny thing, or should say odd thing about it is that three weeks before that, Todd, Crito’s and Aaron’s flat caught fire and burned down or least some of it. Grant from the Marshall Brady house was reported to have said, “Somebody’s out to get the punks!” Is it true? I was worried that our place might get the ole burn job bus so far Madison has been free of that.
That’s it. I don’t feel like giving out addresses. All those that I haven’t wrote to in awhile, expect a letter soon or something soon. All those that have question on this scene report which was written on 4/11. Do so. Later.
P.S. Hello Colette, Gigi, Leslie Marie (or Connie). And Tiny #4 is out of print, when I get he beans to print some more I’ll send all those that I owe a copy, don’t write me for one. That’s it.

Disobey Scene Report
I wrote this for Disobey Fanzine, Issue #6, in 1990 or 1991? Disobey fanzine was published by, Dale and Wendy –then a couple, from northern (?) California. Dale and Wendy were some of my first punk rock pals and zine traders. They did a great comprehensive publication and had many readers. Last time I ran into Dale was out of nowhere, when I was wondering around Gilman street in 1994ish, during a Bikini Kill show.
Anyway, here's another scene report by me. Again, I have left in all typos, misspellings and brick-a-brac. Enjoy.

A Tale of Two Cities Howdy there, I am known as Matt and I do a zine here in Wisconsin called Tiny. I'm gonna try to give you a run down on the local bands, zines, and clubs and hangouts of us WI punk rockers. I'm gonna center this report on two scenes which are quite alike, Madison and Milwaukee. Here goes...
Once Upon A City Named Milwaukee TRADEMARK, who just returned from a nine day tour of the south, put out a tape recently consisting of six songs with better production than the last demo. Their sound can be described as clean and grungy punk with a funky feel to it. Emotional vocals and cool anti-religion and anti-barrier lyrics. The tape is $3 and the shirts with a crying baby for the the graphic is $5, write to em at: Greenfield, Milwaukee. Mike also does a newsletter for a few stamps, ask for it. LACK OF SOCIAL DECENCY (LSD for short) has just released a split 7" with another local band named RHINELANDER. LSD play kinda melodic hardcore with sounds similar to Dissent at times. They keep getting better and are an enjoyable band to watch. I like 'em. Write for stickers or info on their 7" at c/o Sam Cook, Hubertus, Wisconsin. They got shirts also.
MIND THELFT, which is not misspelled, is a newer band that plays more funk than thrash but are still pretty intense nonetheless to watch. They've been playing with a new line-up so the future looks brite. Write to 'em at Brookflied, Wisconsin. TURBINE, more from Waukesha than Milwaukee can be described as technical hardcore. They don't have any tapes or shirts but do have stickers, wrtite: fuck! I can't find it, write them in care of me. Ok?? RHINELANDER, as mentioned above, play more to the college crowd type of thing and have a women vcalist. Poppy punky rocky stuff they play. Write to them at c/o Dan Westie, Milwaukee, WI. DEMISE, more Madison then Milwaukee, have reformed finally with Tim ex- Natural Cause bassist and ex- No Joke drummer Jeff. What does DEMISE sound like? They sound like DEMISE and no one else; please do not get them confused with the DEMISE from CA. Write to them for info on very old demo tapes with the older members and ask about t-shirt and stickers. Milwaukee, Wi. Tell him monotonous sent you, he might give you a the stuff for a cheaper price. SOUL STORM, who are a SE band, plays here and their alond with another band named DRAWBACk. Their very heavy and had but are nationalist in their veiws. With each band I dont have an address 'cause none had been given at any time, sorry. That's the last of the bands, no on to zines.
ALIEN RELAY s morbid poetry, scary graphics, and twisted philoshy centering on the darker side of humanity. Write: Oconomowoc, WI. BUTT UGLY, hateful to this day, comes out the most regurly than any other zine in WI, has the usual sine shit and irrates some to this day. Write: Waukesha, WI. OPTOPHOBIA is more intellectual than most other zines and does more fiction too. Eric the editor now live in Madison. Write him at: c/o Eric Stein, Sellery, Madison, WI. 50/50 is pretty much a brand new thang that's interesting to read. Write and contribute to this zine at c/o Scrods, Germantown, WI. SNAKEBITE/RATTLESNAKE Press is done by two people on a two sided sheet of paper. It's very local but yo be able to find something of interest. Write c/o Kelly Bessa, Milwaukee, WI. Zak does STARK REALITY alone cause he can't work with no one. Write him and say he's a fink (it'll impress him, trust me) at: South Milwaukee, WI, Then there's me, I do a zine called TINY and hopefully by the time you read this I'll have finished #4. Write to me about anything and everything. Oh and tape traders write me to, ok? c/o Matt, Oconomowoc, WI. That's it for this town, now on to MADISON.
A street car named Madison NATURAL CAUSE, also returning from a tour over spring break with Trademark, somewhat recently put a three song demo tape. Their sound can be compared to Voi Vod but unlike Voi Vod NATURAL CAUSE is much heavier and I think much more interesting to listen to. Sent $2 to c/o Matt Mangan, Madison, WI. Ask about stickers too. NAKED FASE, also releasing a very d.i.y demo tape, have that ole time sound punk ruck with a crusty and melodic beat at times. Check them out at Madison, WI. THE DREGS, new as hell to WI, have played a few shows here and there. Their kinda gothic hardcore. No address, sorry. INSPECTOR 12 (I almost forgot them) dropped their bassist, Kurt, and now have picked up Eirc (Kurt's brother) to play the four string with them. I-12 have that modern hc sound with goofy lyrics. They've recently put a high quality record/tape that I think is $5 at this address at: Madison, WI. That's all the bands which I can remember , now ont to fanzine.
DISTRESS, which hasn't been seen for awhile, has it all plus alot of stupid advertising and a lot of other stuff. Write: Madison, WI. CRUSTY is Tim of Demise's zine says that he'll no do CRUSTY anymore cause he's gonna do a new ZINOMATIC 9000. Write the poor guy at: Madison, WI. I mention OPTOPHOBIA already. NO EXTERNAL COMPULSION is pun krock and anarchism and femnism and now the editor home brews too. Write c/o Mulberry Co-Op, Madison, WI. He also does a a small distro. I think that's it.
The following is a contact list of people that I know in each city which either does distroor will set up shows.
For distro in Milwaukee Area in WI Butt Ugly Kelly Bessa Tiny Fanzine
For setting up shows in Milwaukee Kerri Press Kelly Bessa The Unicorn Jason Terd
To set up a show in the Madison Area Distress The New Loft
Note: Tim Burton illustrated and designed both covers!

- Matt, thanks for posting these. It was awesome to read these old reports. A real "snapshot" of the scene at the time. --Pete Prodoehl 21:26, 16 Dec 2006 (PST)
- Thanks Pete and your welcome. And credit where credit is due... thanks for establishing, maintaining, and hosting this site. I have yet one or two more to add (If I can find them.) Matthew Pickard 11:31am, 18 Dec 2006 (PST)
- Soulstorm and Drawback were nationalist in their views?? Not even close...I think it had more to do with certian punkrockers not digging the NYHC/OCHC straight edge sound that these guys did and pushing their own agenda....but then the whole scene did become all about who was punker than thou
- ^---^ Well, I am not sure why I reported why Drawback and Soulstorm were nationalist. I do remember the softspoken guitarist of Soulstorm, Tim, sporting a flight jacket with an American flag patch back in the day. But my comment is not a rip and if anything, is a mis-reporting of the facts. (Even if it was a a rip, seeing that was keyboarded some 16 years ago - is this something that disturbs you seriously to this day?) But you do bring up a point about some members "who was punker than thou." Perhaps. However, I recollect, that there were a small subset of s/e kids who were demonstrably about being more straight-edge than other s/e kids with the self-proclaimed title of "hardline."
