Band History

Original Line-up History

1984 Dave Kawczynski switches High Schools and starts to hang out with old friend Scott Schoenbeck. Dave had been attempting to play with some metal bands but his skill level was not very high. Scott had begun playing guitar and was much further along. Both were getting into punk and hardcore. They decided to form a band. After seeing the name of a Milwaukee punk band Einstein's Rice Boys, Dave thought Einstein is cool but Rice Boys, come one. Dave comes up with the lame Radical Einsteins for the name of the the guitar and bass duo. Scott approves for some reason.

They next set out to find a drummer. Rush aficionado Ted Roberts joins the band. Not only can he drum but we can practice in his parents basement. Dave at this point is only singing because he doesn't have an amp. Songs are written "Suburbs Suck", "Downtown" and what would become "Zombies for Christ". Somewhere along the way they determine the name Radical Einsteins is lame and settle on the equally lame Rad-i-Kill (I actually still have a folder with the Rad-i-Kill logo on it).

The band forges on. Writing songs, making karate and slasher movies and practicing. Late in 1985 Ted informs the band he is going into the Air Force. A grade school friend of Dave's brother Randy Neckolaishen, who was into metal and punk, is suggested. The band can practice at his parents house. Three things happen: Randy turns out to be a way better fit for the band, the band decide that a vocalist is needed and Attitude Adjustments "American Paranoia" is purchased, which turns out to be the blue print for Self Denial.

The band is renamed Self Denial. We initially get Rich Noonan (Dr. Shrinker) to sing. We write "Zombies for Christ" with him but that is the lone highlight. Dave gets frustrated and convinces Scott to launch Rich. Dave suggests Dan Gatewood. Dave had known Dan from the metal scene and asks him to join (I am actually a little fuzzy on Dan joining the band). Rich starts Dr. Shinker with Scott (he felt bad), Matt Grassburger, Dave's cousin Chris Poeping and Dave Priem. Things take off for Self Denial well at least for them it seemed so.

Songs were written and written. The first show is in Dan's parents basement with Mr. Clean. A long and intertwined relationship is formed with the two bands. Dave makes his first punk faux pas by listing Mr. Clean as special guests on the flyer.

New Years Eve 1986, Cafe Voltaire (The Odd Rock). The Speedfreaks are playing an all ages show. Scott, Dave and Dan attend and Dave strikes up a friendship with Speedfreaks drummer Dan Ducahine (mostly because Dave is wearing an Iron Man T-shirt).

The entire band goes to see the Iowa Beef Experience in Kenosha. A band at the last minute cancels. JJ asks Self Denial to play. The band commanders someone's equipment and give it their all. Dave breaks the E string on the bass he is using so he plays all the songs on the A string (all of the bass parts used just the E). It didn't matter. There was a pit.

Well for Dave and Randy it goes all down hill from here. Dave and Randy's relationship with Dan goes south. Dave gets mad at Dan for going to build a shanty town at UW-Milwaukee instead of practicing. Far more punk of Dan than Dave but at the time he saw it as a lack of commitment to the band. The band play a show at some girls house on Loomis Road way outside of Milwaukee. Self Denial plays after Mold (featuring Dr. Shrinker guitarist Chad Henzel on vocals, with a clean shaven head to boot). Dave quits on stage enraged by something (big surprise) Scott turns to Randy and says "Do You quit too?". Randy says "yes" and that is the end of Self Denial Mark I. Dave and Randy go on to form Silent Scream. Dan and Scott forge on without them. --Dave Kaz 14:35, 17 Aug 2005 (PDT)

Second Line-up History

I'll try to fill in the next part... I was friends with Joe Kawczynski. We used to be skaters/punks and would hang out all the time. Joe was in PHK (Potato Head Kids) with me, and when we heard Self Denial was looking for a bass player he volunteered his services, nevermind he didn't even own a bass at the time (we mad a quick run to his brother's apartment to borrow one.) Now, Joe's house and family was always crazy, and supposedly Joe put some stickers on the bass and his brother saw it an almost took it back! Anyway, somehow Joe learned the bass parts, I think Scott and Dan might have come over to Joe's house to show him the songs. I don't think Self Denial played many shows with Joe, but I honestly can't remember. Oh, it should be noted that Dave and Joe were not related, despite having the same last name. --Pete Prodoehl 19:07, 17 Aug 2005 (PDT)
