Band History

Hailing from Madison, Natural Cause started as a speed-metal, punk band in the vein of Slayer, early Corrosion of Conformity, Death and The Dead Kennedys. The band played it's first show and won a battle of the bands at The New Loft teen center in Madison, using the first place recording prize at Smart Studios for the 7 inch "Mess" (Recorded with Doug [A.K.A.Duke] Erickson of Garbage).

Inspired by the D.C. hardcore scene, King Crimson, No Means No and general "no limits" creativity, Natural Cause infused more hardcore and mixed funk and jazz in to their metal sound with new vocalist Troy Anderson and better technical playing abilities. The songs "Arise", "The Quick and the Dead" and "Mess" combined made a trilogy about an undead soul working to be reborn in to the physical world. They played the most incredible show in a backyard in Madison with Antischism. They also did a tour in which they teamed up with Trademark for many shows and later did an East Coast tour and full U.S. tour with Plaid Retina. Their first 7 inch was a split E.P with Blatherskite (from Indianapolis) on Rhetoric Records (#1). The "Mess" 7 inch was released on Profane Existence and included the songs "Authority Denied" and "Meat and Sugar".

The final line up of Natural Cause added Scott Soulfood from Turbine on vocals. With Greg Norman's trained bass playing Natural Cause realized a more elevated level of playing ability writing complex songs out on a dry erase board. The song "Death of a Miser" was greatly shortened from 8 minutes to 5 to find it's way on the the last Very Small Records comp. It was this final line-up that toured the U.S. and finally imploded, with Eric moving to California, Patrick later joing None Left Standing, Scott playing with Pachinko and Greg starting Creature Custard.

Eric Peterson moved to california and played in the defunct bands Counter Clock and Lost Goat. Eric currently plays guitar in Night After Night. Matt Mangan played guitar for Business As Usual, None Left Standing and Paris, Texas. Patick Hotlen has played drums with Last Crack, Creature Custard, Killington Lost, Two Minutes Hate and Knuckel Drager since Natural Cause. More recently he played guitar with Ruined in a Day and Environmental Sounds for Apes.

Patrick had the following to say about the MP3's:

Hell Bound is from the "Troy, Eric, Matt, Pat" days. If I had to guess, I would say it was recorded around 1991. We did a 5 song session in Minneapolis for Profane Existence that was initially rejected because of poor sound quality! The "Mess" EP was the "approved" recording (from Smart Studios) although I think we were not as good a band at the time (with Dave Hoertz on bass and Scott Mominee on vocals).

Death of a Miser from the "Scott, Eric, Greg, Pat" days. Greg was (is) such a good bass player that we started doing some crazy shit. We didn't record half of the stuff that we wrote. The closest thing I have to documentation is a show from O' Cayz. Again, I'm guessing, but I think it was recorded in 1993. A better recording is on DAT tape somewhere (or on vinyl). It was recorded in Plover, WI for a Very Small Records comp. I remember setting up my drums in this guys dining room! There are a bunch of other songs that we recorded at this session. I'll digitize them some day...

  • I still think of Natural Cause as the band that combined heavy music talented playing into something that could crush your soul. I think they proved this at their live shows. Natural Cause was just incredible. --Pete Prodoehl 05:10, 12 Jan 2006 (PST)
