Band History

NRK was formed in September of 1984 by four friends from Brookfield, Wisconsin. The members included Brian Sajnog (vocals), Jeff O'Rourke (guitar), Pete Flessas (bass) and Matt Collins (drums). Their very first show took place on September 15, 1984 at Irene J's (1839 S. 2nd Street) with Disdain. In January of the following year, NRK began playing more shows (Yano's, The Junction, Lincoln Fest, Cafe Voltaire), always receiving enthusiastic responses. Some of the national acts NRK opened for included 7Seconds, Verbal Abuse, The Faction and Dr. Know. In April of 1985, NRK recorded and released a twelve song cassette. The band continued to perform throughout the summer of 1985 and disbanded in August with their final show at Cafe Voltaire (aka the Odd Rock Cafe). As NRK was essentially the very first band for all of its members, it proved to be the catalyst for other groups. Guitarist Jeff O'Rourke went on to form the Milwaukee skate band Earthshoe with Pete's younger brother Andy (vocals) and later had some minor fame with Arizona's Phunk Junkeez. Jeff now lives in Los Angeles. Pete Flessas went on to form Shades of Pale, an experimental/goth band, that saw some local success. His later bands included the Blood Daisies (with Sometime Sweet Susan's Jim Warchol) and Fictional Gods. Pete subsequently went on to law school and is now an attorney in Milwaukee. Matt Collins played drums with the Phoenix band "Jesus Chrysler Supercar" but now lives back in Milwaukee with his wife and kids. Brian Sajnog also lives in the Milwaukee area. -Peter, NRK

Comments

  • When we formed NRK, Jeff O'Rourke was only 14 years old. Even then he was an extraordinary guitarist. He had to sneak into bars so we could play. -Peter, NRK
  • Although we existed for only one year, personality clashes eventually led to our band's breakup. It was ashame because artistically, we had written some promising music. It seems that the contempt in the band fueled our artistic fire. Looking back on it now, I know we could have gone further. We did make an attempt to briefly reform the band in 1987--even writing some new songs for a proposed EP record. Unfortunately, hard feelings resurfaced and that reunion was shortlived. -Peter, NRK
