Band History
I think Brad really wanted to be in a band and managed to convince everyone else it was a good idea...
Where the name came from
The following is from Dean Schubert:
This name originated in a conversation between myself and Brendan 'O Brien at UW-Waukesha's WYRE radio station in the spring of 1988. It was a phrase I coined in reference to Brendan's family holiday trips to Cleveland that he despised. At least that's what my memory tells me... --Dean Schubert
I remember a Waukesha friend of mine telling me the name was in reference to a vegetarian cause. The idea was that McDonald's or someone bought beef from a big slaughterhouse in Cleveland. All these years I believed that. Guess it was bullshit, eh? Oh and hi Dean Schubert. How's your bro these days? --Andrew Peterson (Peterskin)

Comments
- Brad would play bass for the song Pipeline. At The Unicorn some guy said to me "They have two bass players?" and I said "Um, just for one song..." --Pete Prodoehl
- Casey and Brendan from the original line-up were brothers. Somehow the name "Cleveland Bound Death Sentence" came from a trip they had to take to Cleveland, Ohio or something... --Pete Prodoehl
- Scott (supposedly) gave permission to Aaron Elliot (aka Cometbus, aka Skrub) to use the band name "Cleveland Bound Death Sentence" years after C.B.D.S broke up and much confusion ensued... (Oops! Wrong! See below...) --Pete Prodoehl
- Untrue-permission was never granted to ye Cometbuser. Their 1st 7" stated something to the fact that the new CBDS owed the old CBDS a "beer "for taking the name off a flyer one of the band members during travels of the greater Wisconsin area. Through a mutual friend of a friend a 12oz can of Old Milwauke was delivered along with a 7inch.... --Man in The Trees
- Dug Belan hired C.B.D.S. to play at his birthday party in Waukesha when he was like 16 or something... Pete was there, but did not discover the fact that this was actually Dug's party until about 10 years later, despite the fact he and Dug were friends for a long time... C.B.D.S. did a Minor Threat cover and Pete sang it (though he did not know the words very well.) --Pete Prodoehl
- I played with CBDS for about a month. Highlight was playing the Rotation Station in Rockford, IL with Youth of Today. --Dave Kaz
- I also believe Dan Duchaine of the Speedfreaks played drums at this show. Highlight of the show was the blowing up and bodypassing of a blowup sex doll. Did not go over well with the Youth O Todayyyy aaayy... --Man in The Trees
- Ha! I was the one who had to pose as the C.B.D.S. "manager" and ask the owner of The Rotation Staion if we could have the doll back! I told her that a friend of the bands brought it along as a joke, and no one in the band knew about it, or something like that... --Pete Prodoehl 06:00, 19 Aug 2005 (PDT)
- Ah yes and I was branded a "womanizer" for making out with the blonde girl with the hat instead of loading and getting the blow up doll back. To top this evening off when we returned to Milwaukee we decided to go to "the Highway" and cruise. "The Highway" was where guys with muscle cars cruised, it was between Oklahoma Ave and Greenfield Ave on Highway 100. The CBDS band vehicle was a Hearse, thus we thought it would be real funny driving around the hearse with a blow up doll in the window. We pick up some girls that were intrigued and freaked them out. --Dave Kaz 07:41, 19 Aug 2005 (PDT)
- So when Scott (or was it Brad) said the band was just an elaborate ruse to meet girls, they meant it? ;) --Pete Prodoehl 08:17, 24 Aug 2005 (PDT)
- Scott Shoenbeck now plays in Dashboard Confessional, and has appeared on The Tonight Show and other big stuff... --Pete Prodoehl
- Wasn't someone from this band also in The Promise Ring? The new (or stolen) CBDS just put out a new 7" on No Idea. They were/are somewhat popular since Aaron and Patrick from D4 are in the band. --Jason
- I think Scott Shoenbeck was in The Promise Ring for a while. It may have been bassist Tim Burton he replaced... --Pete Prodoehl 18:44, 30 Aug 2005 (PDT)
- First time I saw CBDS was at the Odd Rock in 88? Only local bands that played at this show. Silent Scream played too. I remember Brad (?) (CBDS) signing off a spiral bound notebook for some, if not all, songs. Local shows were much more sane and friendlier than when bigger-name bands came into town.
